Micromax's new flagship model Canvas Turbo made it to the Indian market a few days ago.
The feature-rich Canvas Turbo has incited a price war among the high-end MNC brands, especially top smartphone maker Samsung (26 percent market share). The company is bound to feel the heat from Micromax's new phone as the local player placed second in the market (with 22 percent) is steadily closing in on the leader.
With a competitive price-tag of less than ₹20,000, the Canvas Turbo is expected to have effect on the Samsung's 2013 flagship model Galaxy S4's sales in a price-sensitive market like India.
Here is a brief specification comparison between the Canvas Turbo and the Galaxy S4.
Display:
Canvas Turbo sports a 5.0-inch full HD (1920x1080p) IPS LCD display, with pixel density close to 441 ppi (pixels per inch) and boasts CGS (Continuous Grain Silicon) and NM2 wide-angle screen technology. Galaxy S4 flaunts a same screen size as well, with high resolution Super AMOLED display having pixel density of 441 ppi.
Processor, RAM and Storage Capacity:
Micromax's new phone packs a MediaTek-based 1.5GHz quad-core processor. On the other hand, the Samsung flagship model runs on the company's in-house Exynos 5410 Octa-core chipset, housing two quad-core processors (a 1.6GHz quad-core processor and another 1.2 GHz quad-core processor), making it a more efficient and powerful smartphone than its local rival.
Canvas Turbo, despite boasting 2GB, once again comes short against the Galaxy S4, as the former packs a non-expandable 16GB memory, whereas Samsung device boasts 2GB RAM and 16GB storage onboard, with microSD card slot giving users the option of memory expansion up to 64GB.
Camera:
Micromax Canvas Turbo houses a standard 13.0-megapixel camera with LED flash support capable of recording full HD video and packs a 5.0-megapixel secondary camera on the front side. It also comes pre-loaded with photo editing tools like Camerazzi: object eraser, 360-degree Panorama capture, Cinemagraph and a slew of gimmicky smart gesture control features.
But the Micromax's phone is no match for Samsung's flagship Galaxy S4 which boasts top-of-the-line camera specifications. Both the front (2.0 MP) and main (13.0 MP) cameras are capable of recording full HD videos. The rear side camera boasts a gamut of features like BIS sensors, HDR, Dual shot, 360-degree Drama shot, Sound and Shot (user can place audio recording inside a still-photo) and many more.
Mobile Operating System:
Both smartphones stand even in this apect as they run on the same Android platform, but differ in OS versions. Canvas Turbo ships with v4.2.1 Jelly Bean, whereas Samsung Galaxy S4 runs on the recently updated v4.3 OS which boasts some enhancements in terms of performance and memory management, as well as inclusion of Hindi language support and restricted access feature, enabling users to create guest profile with limited access to apps and contents in the device.
Price:
By pricing the Canvas Turbo under ₹20,000, Micromax is certain to strike a chord with price-conscious middle-class buyers in India, who are looking for low-priced high-end phones. On the other hand, top-billed Samsung is no stranger in the subcontinent market; it has initiated creative marketing schemes, offering huge discounts (monetary as well as virtual - like free songs, subscriptions to digital magazines etc) on the Galaxy S4 in exchange for older smartphones.
According to recent reports, Micromax Canvas Turbo is selling for around ₹19,300, whereas Galaxy S4's price is hovering between ₹37,500-₹40,000.
