Mick Schumacher started pre-season testing in a Formula 4 car at Oschersleben in Germany on 8 April after moving up from karting.
The 16-year-old son of seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher will be racing for the first time under the family name.
Michael Schumacher is still recovering from severe head injuries sustained in a skiing accident in December 2013.
Mick was runner-up in last seasons World, European and German karting championships, which helped him get this seasons drive in Formula 4 with Dutch outfit Van Amersfoort Racing.
The 16-year-old was the first driver named for the 2015 season by the team, which has since signed F1 designer Adrian Neweys 16-year-old son Harrison and 18-year-old Australian Joey Mawson. The Formula 4 season begins at Oschersleben on 25 April.
Michael Schumacher is continuing his rehabilitation at home in the Swiss town of Gland after spending months in hospital following his skiing accident in December 2013.
