A Miami couple made a splash 25 August, marrying underwater five miles off Key Largo. Kimberly Triolet and Jorge Rodriguez chose the day and the subterranean site because it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the installation of an iconic underwater statue called Christ of the Deep.
Triolet and Rodriguez wed beside the Christ of the Deep statue which sits at roughly 25ft below the surface. A notary public in scuba gear officiated the ceremony using a special underwater slate with their vows written on it. A special camera made it possible for friends and other divers aboard a boat to witness the ceremony. And several fish and other marine life were present as well.
To be able to get married at the Christ statue on the 50th anniversary is amazing and well for sure be coming back for our 50th anniversary to dive it again, Triolet said. Picture cannot just describe how pretty it is, and its something definitely that should be on everybodys bucket list to see.
The 9-foot-tall bronze Christ of the Deep was submerged 25 August 1965. It became a symbol for Key Largos John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Americas first underwater preserve created in 1960. Visitors from around the world come to Key Largo to snorkel, dive and ride glass-bottom boats to photograph the iconic sculpture as well as nearby coral formations.
