After building a lot of suspense, MG Motor India gave a theatrical introduction to its first SUV in India. The British car brand owned by Chinese multinational auto manufacturer SAIC confirmed on Wednesday that its upcoming SUV will be called MG Hector in India. The carmaker had been teasing the SUV's name with a countdown on its social media channels, building intense hype for the car much before it has hit Indian roads.
MG Hector is not a random name picked by the company. There's a story behind it, which most might find inspiring. According to the company, the name Hector draws inspiration from Prince Hector of Troy, the warrior hero of Homer's Iliad best known for his noble qualities. In addition, the SUV commemorates the memory of Royal Hector biplane, which was used by the Royal Air Force in 1930s.
MG Motor India also added that Hector stands for "Strength, Bold, Trustworthy and Dependable." These are the words every consumer can relate to while purchasing a car in India and it is yet to be seen how well MG Motors can justify its claims.
Now that the official name of MG Hector is out in the open, consumers can't wait to see the premium SUV on Indian roads. In the short video announcing the name of the car, MG Motor India also confirmed that MG Hector will be hitting Indian roads in mid-2019, which puts it right around May this year.
MG Hector is expected to be priced around Rs 15-20 lakh (ex-showroom) in India, and it will be competing directly against Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson, Mahindra XUV500 and Tata Harrier. The automaker was praised for its early adoption of Make in India initiative and the Hector SUV will be manufactured locally at the Halol facility in Gujarat.
MG Hector will be positioned in a C-segment SUV category with a 5-seater option. The latest teaser shows camouflaged Hector cruising past the snowy hilly mountains, which proves it will be ideal to drive in cold weather conditions. The video shows a sleek LED indicators, which look pretty cool for a car its price, and a large grille up front gives it a muscular look.
MG Hector is expected to come with several premium features on both safety and entertainment side. A large tablet-like touchscreen infotainment system, ambient lighting, 360-degree camera, panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery and electrically adjustable seats and much more will elevate the driving experience.
MG Hector is expected to arrive in petrol and diesel variants, with manual and automatic transmission options.
