Every year the celebration takes place on the first Monday of May. From the year of 1946, the annual event of the Met's Costume Institute's fundraising began. The event was initially named the Party of the Year. It used to be held off-site of the Waldorf Astoria or the Rainbow Room.
Formally known as the Costume Institute Gala, the event is co-chaired by Vogue US Editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. She was even featured in the 2016 documentary The First Monday in May which portrays her preparing for the big bash. This year Wintour will be joined by the likes of singer Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams and the celeb couple Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady.
There is a special theme of the event every year. This year theme is Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons in honour of the legendary Japanese fashion designer Rei Kwakubo. Last year the theme was "Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology."
