Chandan Bose, the prime accused in the Mathura violence case, has been arrested from the Basti district of Uttar Pradesh. He is accused of having shot dead policeman Santosh Yadav, the Times of India reported.
"Ram Vriksh Yadav, Chandan Bose, Girish Yadav and Rakesh Gupta are the main culprits and leaders of this group and if alive they will be caught by the police," state Director General of Police Javed Ahmed had earlier been quoted by the Press Trust of India as saying.
At least 24 people, including Mathura Superintendent of Police Mukul Dwivedi and Farah Station House Officer Santosh Yadav, were reportedly killed in mob violence during an operation to clear government land in Mathura on June 2, according to PTI. The police had recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition and had arrested over 320 people following the incident.
The Indian Express had reported that Ram Vriksh Yadav, the alleged leader of the Azad Bharat Vidhik Vaicharik Kranti Satyagrahi, which was purportedly behind the violence, had died in clashes with the police.
The police had announced a reward of Rs. 5,000 each on any information that would lead to the arrest of the culprits, the IE had reported. Bose is a resident of Ludhiana in Punjab while Girish Yadav and Rakesh Gupta belong to the Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh.
Akhilesh Yadav, chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, had ordered a probe into the clashes, while Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh was quoted by PTI as saying that he had spoken to Akhilesh and reviewed the situation.
