Yash-starrer "Masterpiece" has done a smashing business on the first day at the box office. The Kannada movie was reportedly released in about 240+ screens in Karnataka and approximately 30 screens outside the state.
Speaking to IBTimes India, producer Jayanna said: "'Masterpiece' has got an extraordinary opening in Karnataka. The film was planned to released in 240 screens in the state but due to the unprecedented demand for tickets in some places outside Bengaluru, we have released in additional 30 screens."
Jayanna also claimed: "I have not received the complete reports yet. But as per our estimation, "Masterpiece" might have earned around Rs 6 crore, which will be a new record in Sandalwood for the opening-day collection."
A theatre-owner who had screened "Vedalam" in Bengaluru said "Masterpiece" has become the "Vedalam" of Sandalwood: "What the Ajith-starrer did for Tamil box office, 'Masterpiece' has done for Kannada films on the release day!"
"Vedalam" had turned out to become the highest grosser of Kollywood of all time, raking Rs 15.5 crore on the opening day. It broke all the existing records, including that of Rajinikanth's "Lingaa", which raked in Rs 12.8 crore, and Vijay's "Kaththi", which earned Rs 12.5 crore, on the first day at Tamil box office.
Meanwhile, Jayanna, who is obviously stunned by the response his latest movie has received, hopes the film improves its performance on Friday, the Christmas holiday.
However, the Kannada movie could not be released on Thursday at some centres outside Karnataka. The producer has confirmed that it is releasing on Friday.
"Masterpiece" is an action-thriller written and directed by Manju Mandavya. Shanvi Srivastava is in the female lead in the flick, which has senior actress Suhasini Maniratnam playing an important role.
