After the encounter with Agent Ward (Brett Dalton) on the mysterious planet where Coulson (Clark Gregg) brutally killed him, it seems he will return back to Earth as a changed man, and not all changes would be the good ones.
In the upcoming episode of "Marvel's Agents of SHIELD", Coulson, having returned to Earth after killing Ward, is no more the same Coulson the fans know him, due to the trauma he has suffered recently.
Although the SHIELD leader is safely back without any signs of major injury, he is undoubtedly psychologically disturbed, especially because he failed to save Rosalind (Constance Zimmer) and had to kill Ward against his principles.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer of the show Jeff Bell said: "It will be hard for Coulson to deal with everything that transpired, especially the instant he compromised his character to get revenge. Coulson could have left Ward alive after beating him to a pulp, but he chose to finish the job anyway.
"He pushed down hard against the bad guy's chest with his robotic arm until Ward's heart stopped beating. The top man of SHIELD will reportedly regret he had to deviate from his principles, even if it happened in one of his weakest and most unsteady moments."
Bell further said where Coulson is now is a much darker place, having lost someone who clearly meant the world to him in a way he didn't know he could feel again.
"The fact that Ward took Rosalind away from him enraged him in such a way that he compromised his character, albeit in a very cool, epic way. Coulson doesn't feel great about that," he said.
Even though Ward was shown to be dead in the previous episode titled "Maveth," viewers can expect him to return in a completely unexpected way, as hinted by Belle, who said Earthlings should be very, very afraid of a new creature who is coming to Earth and can destroy the whole planet.
Season 3 of "Marvel's Agents of SHIELD" will return on 8 March, 2016.
