Ignis, Maruti Suzuki's first compact crossover, is only four months old in the Indian market but the car has already caught the fancy of urban drivers. So popular is Ignis that the third car to go on sales through Nexa, the destination for Maruti's premium car, has touched sales of nearly 20,000 units after its launch in the country.

The bookings for Ignis are said to be rising and the waiting period for the car has been pushed to over five months. Positioned below Baleno, a premium hatchback in Nexa, Ignis targets the millennials. Maruti has built the car on a new generation rigid platform embodying Suzuki Total Effective Control Technology (TECT).

Ignis gets a cabin finished in black and ivory dual tone and the look is completed by the EDM-inspired illumination in the speedometer, and carbon fibre texture on louvers and speedometer. It comes equipped with an infotainment system integrated with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Mirror Link. The compact crossover is the first car in the Maruti Suzuki portfolio to offer Android Auto feature. Safety in the Ignis is aided by dual airbags, seatbelts with pre-tensioner force limiter (PTFL) and ABS with EBD. It also gets ISOFIX Anchorage, a child seat restraint system as standard in all variants.

The Ignis is made at the Gurgaon plant of the company in Haryana, which also makes the Vitara Brezza. Priced between Rs 4.59 lakh to Rs 7.46 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), Ignis comes with two engine options — 1.2L VVT petrol and 1.3L DDiS 190 diesel engine. The petrol as well as the diesel trims come with Auto Gear Shift (AGS) technology. While the petrol mill in Ignis is tuned to churn out 82bhp of power at 6000rpm with a torque of 113Nm at 4200rpm, the diesel mill generates 74bhp of power at 4000 rpm along with a torque of 190Nm at 2000 rpm.

In its segment, the compact crossover is pitted against Mahindra KUV100.
