India's largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki showcased its compact crossover, Ignis at the Auto Expo 2016 and confirmed its launch during the festive season. Emerging reports indicate that the company will launch production-spec model next month.
The Ignis is the third new product to be sold via Nexa premium dealerships of the company. The vehicle is also considered as the micro-SUV for its raised ground clearance. The model sold in Japan features 4x4 system. However, there is no final word yet from Maruti Suzuki on adding four-wheel drive system in India-spec model. The Ignis will go up against the Mahindra KUV100 in the newly formed micro SUV segment.
The company was mum about powertrain of the Ignis during the expo. In the following months, the crossover has been rumoured with a 1.2-litre VTVT petrol engine and a 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel unit. The diesel mill is expected to be coupled with an automated manual transmission (AMT). Latest reports also say Maruti Suzuki will employ the 1.0 BoosterJet turbo-petrol engine in Ignis.
The Ignis measures 3,700mm in length, 1,660mm in width, and 1,595mm in height. The vehicle comes with a wheelbase of 2,435mm and has a ground clearance of 180mm. Safety features such as ABS with EBD, airbags and hill descent control is expected to be standard in the Ignis. The crossover will also flaunt features such as LED daytime running lamps (DRL), flared wheel arches and a wide C-pillar. Ignis is expected to cost between Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7 lakh.
