India's leading auto manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki, will halt its petrol car production at its Gurgaon plant on Saturday owing to sluggish demand in the market.
The plant which churns out Maruti's bestselling car models like M800, Alto series, Wagon R, Estillo, Dzire and Ertiga will suspend production of all these model for one day. The company's Manesar plant will continue operations.
"There will be a one-day production suspension at the Gurgaon plant. The Manesar plant will function normally," a company official said adding, "The reason for the one-day production shut down at Gurgaon is due to market slowdown."
Maruti Suzuki has reported a plunge of 7.9 percent to 1, 09,567 units in its total sales for February 2013, compared to 1, 18,949 units for the same month last year. The decision to halt its car production might have influenced by the decline in vehicles sales last month.
Latest reports suggest that Maruti is likely to begin construction of a new plant in Gujarat in the coming quarter. The final decision on this will be taken in the next board meeting which is going to be held in April.
