Domestic equity indices ended Tuesday trade on a positive note, but were not able to hold on to morning gains due to late selling in auto and banking stocks.
While the 30-share Sensex touched 26,392.76, up 0.17 percent, the 50-share Nifty gained 0.18 percent to end at 8,143.15 on Tuesday trade. Shares of banks, IT, capital goods and oil and gas among others witnessed buying from investors. However, shares of auto, FMCG and consumer durables companies dragged indices.
Among major gainers, Tata Power, Idea Cellular, HDFC, BPCL and Tata Steel closed in the green with Tata Power gaining the most. Bosch, HCL Tech, Maruti Suzuki, Eicher Motors and Power Grid lost on Tuesday trade. Both mid cap and small cap stocks supported the uptrend and ended with gains.
Meanwhile, monetary policy committee of Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) started deliberations on Tuesday. RBI is all set to announce its first policy review after demonetisation on Wednesday and analysts are expecting a rate cut, making way for further monetary easing.
Rupee appreciated by 31 paisa to touch 67.90 against dollar by the end of Tuesday trade.
