Indian film industry is currently witnessing a phenomenon called "Sairat." Marathi film "Sairat," directed by Nagraj Manjule, is a simple love story, but has captured several hearts in India and internationally.
It is rare for a film to achieve critical acclaim as well as become a box office success. Even Bollywood films, most of the time, fail to excel in both the categories, but Marathi film "Sairat" has become one of the most loved films as well as a blockbuster box office hit.
"Sairat," starring Rinku Rajguru and Akash Thosar, was released in approximately 450 cinemas across Maharashtra on April 29, along with big Bollywood release "Baaghi," starring Tiger Shroff and Shraddha Kapoor. However, "Sairat" fared better than "Baaghi" despite releasing in lesser number of screens.
Manjule's directorial earned over Rs. 80 crore nett from the domestic box office in five weeks, which is one of the highest. "Sairat" has shattered the records of "Baaghi" (Rs. 76.3 crore nett) and now the film is aiming to beat the lifetime box office collection records of Shah Rukh Khan's "Fan," which minted Rs. 84.10 crore nett.
With over Rs. 80 crore nett income, "Sairat" has become the fourth biggest grosser of this year, after "The Jungle Book," Akshay Kumar's "Airlift" and Shah Rukh's "Fan." And soon it will overtake SRK's "Fan" at the box office.
