A total of 280 candidates are in the fray for the elections to the 60-seat Manipur assembly. The elections will be held Jan. 28.
A total of 291 persons filed nomination papers by Thursday, which was the last day of filing nominations. Saturday was the last day of withdrawing papers, and 11 candidates withdrew their nominations by Saturday evening, bringing the number down to 280.
The Congress is contesting in all the 60 seats while the Trinamool Congress has fielded its candidates in 48 seats.
The Manipur State Congress Party has fielded candidates in 38 seats while the Communist Party of India is contesting in 23 seats.
Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh has filed his nomination in Thoubal constituency while Leader of the Opposition and state NCP president Radha Binod Koijam is contesting from Thangmeiband constituency in Imphal West.
