Saturday's incident of moral policing, in which Hindu Jagarana Vedike (HJV) activists assaulted several boys and girls at a resort in Mangalore, pushed the BJP government on Sunday to order a police investigation into the attacks.
On Saturday night, a group of fifty so-called activists of HJV brutally attacked dozens of boys and girls who were partying at the Morning Mist resort situated on the outskirts of Mangalore, Karnataka.
The incident came as a shame for the BJP government with opposition parties criticising the centre for its failure to check pro-Hindu activists. The government has urged the Additional Deputy General of Police (Law and Order) Bipin Gopalkrishna to visit Mangalore and get first hand and detailed information about the episode.
A day after the attacks took place Gopalkrishna arrived at Morning Mist resort to take a look at the situation and inspect the area. He, however, refused to divulge any information to the media.
Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar assured that action will be taken against the arrested culprits, and that police authorities are continuing with their investigations.
"We have arrested 8 people. Criminal action has been taken against culprits," IBN quoted Shetter as saying.
The incident has triggered protests from various women groups demanding strict action against all those involved in the attacks.
Dr Ranjana Kumari, a prominent women's rights activist, described it a shocking and shameful incident. "All the culprits must be punished. The police must ensure safety for women," said Ranajana.
On Sunday morning, HJV activists staged a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner's office, condemning the arrests of their group members. The protesters justified the attacks saying it was to "protect culture" and criticised authorities for not taking actions against the girls and boys who were partying.
