Manchester United have reportedly made a shock move for Manchester City midfielder James Milner. Liverpool were already in the queue for a free transfer for Milner but Ed Woodward has inquired with Milner's advisers in the past few days. Milner went out of contract at Manchester City at the end of the season.
According to the Daily Mirror, the 29-year old midfielder has already refused an extension to his current contract. Liverpool were looking for Milner as a replacement for Steven Gerrard who hung his boots few days ago and would expect Milner to play along with Joradan Henderson and Phillipe Coutinho.
Milner was reportedly offered a sum of £130,000-a-week deal by City, which he refused to sign. Milner is apparently unhappy with his position under Manuel Pelligrini at the club and wants to look for greener pastures in the next season.
Woodward has already enquired about this classy midfielder who has had a good season with the archrivals. In that case, if Milner is roped in by United, it would give their midfield a major boost and they can save money for their other big transfers for the upcoming season.
The key to this transfer would be if Red Devils boss Louis Van Gaal assures him a pivotal role in the squad, which he has been missing in his current side City. Then it might well be a possible deal. So far in 2014-2015 season, Milner has featured in 32 out of 38 games for City and has scored 5 times. He also managed to club seven assists to his name.
Manchester United have already found their midfield solution in the form of Ander Herrera, who was outstanding in the recently conculded English Premier League (EPL) season. Van Gaal would want a central supporting role just behind Herrera, which Milner would be at his best if given a chance.
The only thought that would cross Milner's mind would be if at all Woodward makes him a lucrative offer then whether he should join his rival club or not.
