Wayne Rooney will be absent for another match as Manchester United travel to Holland to face PSV Eindhoven in their Champions League Group B opener on Tuesday.
Marouane Fellaini was deployed as a centre forward by Louis Van Gaal on Saturday, and even if the Belgian did not have much of an impact, it did not stop Manchester United from picking up a 3-1 win over an uninspiring Liverpool.
With Rooney missing, owing to a hamstring injury, from the touring party to PSV, Van Gaal might again consider using Fellaini as a striker up front, but there is another player willing to step up and fill the shoes of the club captain.
"If the manager wants me to play there then yes, of course I would," Ashley Young said. "I can play in lots of positions and I have done that under the manager, whether it is up front or in midfield.
"Hopefully I can play there [through the middle] but it's up to the manager."
Young made an immediate impact after coming on as a substitute in the second half, winning the freekick which led to the crucial opening goal, struck by Daley Blind. The winger, though, has not been able to force his way into the starting lineup often enough this season, and he is hopeful a bright performance on Saturday will allow him the opportunity of more starts, after impressing last campaign down the left.
"It has [been a while] and every player in the squad wants to be in the starting XI and I am not different," Young added. "I want to play as much as I can, but when I am called from the bench as I was against Liverpool, I just want to show the manager that I am ready and willing to give 100%.
"I have always said that it is good to have competition for places and we have that in abundance in the squad."
Young, though, is struggling a little with an ankle injury, even if it is not expected to hamper his chances of playing against PSV. One player who is definitely out, however, along with Rooney, is Phil Jones. Apart from those two, though, Van Gaal is expected to have a full squad to choose from.
For PSV Eindhoven, Jetro Willems, Florian Jozefzoon, Adam Maher and Menno Koch are ruled out.
Expected lineups: PSV Eindhoven: Zoet; Brenet, Moreno, Bruma, Arias; Guardado, Hendrix, Propper, Lestienne; De Jong, Narsingh.
Manchester United: De Gea; Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Shaw; Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlin; Mata, Herrera, Memphis; Fellaini.
