Sergio Aguero scored a last minute penalty to give Manchester City a 2-1 comeback win at Borussia Moenchengladbach in the Champions League on 30 September and their first three points in Group D. Gladbach, having waited 37 years for their first home game in Europes premier club competition, stunned their big-name opponents with a 54th minute goal by Lars Stindl.
City, who have goalkeeper Joe Hart to thank for keeping them in the game with half a dozen superb saves, drew level after Nicolas Otamendis strike was deflected in by Andreas Christensen for an own goal in the 65th minute. City launched into a late rally in search of a winner and were rewarded when Argentine striker Aguero scored from the spot.
I think first of all that was very important to win, but I think that both teams deserved to win, said Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini afterwards. I think Borusssia (Moenchengladbach) played very well, especially the first 65 minutes. They had important options, that Joe (Hart) made important saves, and we also had options that we missed. So in that moment they deserve to be winning 1:0. But after that we had strong reactions in the last 25 minutes where we were about to score two goals, where we had good chances. So for a reaction I am very happy with the three points but I think they played really well.
Moenchengladbach coach Andre Schubert was sorry not to get a point from the encounter.
Of course we are all very disappointed that we didnt get any points out of it, I think we deserved to draw, or that in the first half there were one or two possibilities that we could have used to score as well, aside from the penalty shoot, and of course we are sad that in the last minute there was an opposing goal through the penalty shoot, he said.
