Mammootty's "Munnariyippu" is set to release on 22 August. It was previously scheduled for mid-June release, but due to reasons unknown, it got postponed.
The film is directed by former cinematographer Venu. He had won Indira Gandhi Award for Best First Film of a Director for his film "Daya" (1998).
It is touted as a psycho thriller with a strong narration that is closely associated with the life and culture of Kerala unlike the typical narrations.
"Usually everyone has a notion that psycho thrillers are very serious films. But "Munnariyippu" is different from them as it's an entertainer and has a lot of comedy in it. You can watch it as a light-hearted one. This film is a different type of new gen film in terms of narrations. "Munnariyippu" is a light hearted entertainer," said Bina Paul the editor of the film in a video published by "Munnariyippu" team.
The story of revolves around the life of an ex-convict Raghavan (Mammootty) who leads a simple life and is fond of solitude. The character of Anjali Arakkal (played by Aparna Gopinath) is a freelance journalist. She is in a mission to know the true story of Raghavan and his life. The film also discusses the difference in the personalities of these two characters and how their life and thoughts influenced each other.
The cast also include Nedumudi Venu, Prathap Pothan, Renji Panicker, Joshy Mathew, Sreeraman, Sudheesh and Saiju Kurup.
The script for the film is done by R Unni who have done the script for films like "Bridge" ("Kerala Café"), "Big B", "Chappa Kurish", "Bachelor Party" and "Kullante Bharya" ("5 Sundarikal"). The story and the cinematography of the film are done by Venu himself.
"Munnariyippu" is edited by Bina Paul and the music is composed by Bijipal. Jyothish Shankar is the art director while the costumes are designed by Siji Thomas. The film is produced by Ranjith under the banner of Gold Coin Motion Pictures.
