West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee made a giant gaffe on Wednesday, tweeting "RIP Bardhan" on her Twitter account even as CPI leader AB Bardhan's condition continues to be critical in hospital.
Several leading media houses also retweeted the controversial tweet by the West Bengal CM.
Though the Trinamool Congress supremo deleted the condolence tweet immediately, ANI got hold of a screengrab of the tweet.
"#RIP AB Bardhan. He worked so many years in politics and in trade unions. His demise ismourned by all. Condolence to his family & friends," the deleted tweet had said.
The 92-year-old leader, who is admitted to the GB Pant Hospital in New Delhi, is surviving on ventilator, party leaders said. He was hospitalised after suffering a paralytic stroke.
His daughter is at the hospital, while his son is expected to arrive from the US on Wednesday night.
Bardhan's wife, who was a professor in Nagpur University, had died in 1986.
Bardhan, who had led the trade union movement in Maharashtra for several years, shifted to national politics in the 1990s.
