An Australian lawyer died after a pub brawl in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.
Bhishma Digpaul, 38, who was holidaying alone, was stabbed several times by some locals in a bar at Jalan Doraisamy. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but he succumbed to his injuries, several hours later.
According to reports, Diagpaul, who was in an inebriated state, approached a woman in the bar. This irked the woman's boyfriend and led to a confrontation and a fight. Five men were reportedly involved in the attack.
Police have currently detained a young man in connection to the case.
"We have detained the boyfriend (of the woman) to assist in the investigations," Dang Wangi police chief ACP Zainuddin Ahmad told The Star Online.
According to authorities, the victim was of Mauritian origin and held a dual citizenship. He suffered eight stabs from sharp objects, which punctured his lungs, said ACP Ahmed.
Investigations are taking place to ascertain the exact instances that led to his death.
The incident was a grim reminder of a similar case in July, which led to the death of a 51-year-old tourist in Thailand.
The victim, Bobby Carter, and his son were involved in an argument with music band members of a local bar in Krabi. The duo was stabbed with steel rods. Carter died on his way to hospital and his son received grave injuries. The accused musicians were arrested.
