A Malaysia Airlines flight, with 298 people on board, was shot down on Thursday over eastern Ukraine.

The MH17 crashed near the village of Hrabove about 40 km (25 miles) from Russian border near the city of Donetsk, a stronghold of pro-Russian rebels.

Following the crash, the world leaders have demanded an international investigation into the shooting down of the airliner, which could increase tensions between Russia and the West.

The airliner had 298 people on board, including 283 passengers and 15 crew members. Among the many nationalities, there were 154 Dutch, 28 Malaysians, 27 Australians and 12 Indonesians. All crew members were Malaysian, Reuters reported.

This is the second tragedy to hit Malaysia Airlines this year, after the unexplained disappearance of Flight MH370 in March.
