Majnu has made a decent collection at the US box office in the first weekend, but has failed to shatter the records of Nani's previous releases Bhale Bhale Magadivoy (BBM), Krishna Gaadi Veera Prema Gaadha (KVPG) and Gentleman.
Nani's last three releases have been big hits at the US box office and their success had created a lot of hype and expectations about Majnu. AZIndia Media LLC acquired its overseas theatrical rights for a record price and it released the movie in over 115 screens across North America alone.
The Virinchi Varma-directed movie received very good response in the preview shows on Thursday, but it could not beat the records of Bhale Bhale Magadivoy and Gentleman. Majnu made good collection at the US box office on the first day and showed decent growth on Saturday. However, the movie witnessed huge drop in its business on Sunday.
Majnu has collected $390,313 (Rs 2.60 crore) at the US box office in the first weekend. Taran Adarsh tweeted: "Telugu film #Majnu - USA - Week 1: Thu previews $ 58,369, Fri $ 111,441, Sat $ 148,550, Sun $ 71,953. Total: $ 390,313 [₹ 2.60 cr]. @Rentrak."
Nani's previous releases -- Krishna Gaadi Veera Prema Gaadha, Gentleman and Bhale Bhale Magadivoy -- collected $464,239, $537,490 and $718,378, respectively, at the US box office in their opening weekend. Considering its pre-release hype and promotions, Majnu was expected to shatter these records and become the biggest money spinner of the actor, but it has failed to do so. Here are the day-wise breakups of the four films.
Movie | Premiere | Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Total |
Majnu | $58,369 | $111,441 | $148,550 | $71,953 | $390,313 |
KVPG | $41,368 | $103,214 | $171,447 | $148,210 | $464,239 |
Gentleman | $72,418 | $141,571 | $202,412 | $121,089 | $537,490 |
BBM | $70,132 | $164,459 | $248,546 | $235,241 | $718,378 |
