It looks like Mahindra & Mahindra is pretty serious about the hybridisation and electrification of its SUVs. After launching Scoprio Intelli-hybrid and the e-Verito, the company is reportedly working on XUV mild hybrid and KUV fully-electric SUV.
The XUV mild hybrid will enter market in the next 6-12 months reports ET Auto. The SUV is expected to get similar technology incorporated in the Scoprio Intelli-hybrid. The Intelli-Hybrid technology reduces fuel consumption by up to seven per cent in Scorpio by assisting the engine with electric power during acceleration. It automatically switches engine off while the vehicle is stationary (start-stop) and regenerates brake energy, while applying brakes to charge the battery.
Both Scorpio and XUV500 use the same 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine. The mill in Scorpio develops 120bhp and in XUV500, it belts out 140bhp. With the technology in place, the XUV500 hybrid is also expected to reduce fuel consumption by up to seven per cent.
On the other hand, the KUV100 fully-electric is a long term project. The debut of this model is expected by 2020 and it will be the most affordable electrically powered compact SUV project. Codenamed S107, the project aims at convergence of Mahindra's UV know-how and electric division's environment-friendly engine for future ready products.
Apart from these projects, Mahindra is alternatively working on four door version E2o. The model caught attention while testing near Bangalore recently. Mahindra Electric, formerly known as Mahindra Reva is also planning to launch the eSupro in the commercial vehicle segment soon.
