One of the all time successful SUVs of Mahindra, the Scorpio has achieved the milestone of exceeding five lakh unit sales in the country. The four lakh unit sales milestone for the Scorpio came in 2013, indicating sales over 50,000 units per year for the last two years.
Launched in 2002, the Scorpio was the first SUV from the company for the global market. After 13 years down the line, the Scorpio is still one of the best selling utility vehicles of Mahindra. Over 3,455 units of the SUV have been sold till August this year.
The Scorpio got the first major update in April 2006 with a more muscular design. The third generation of the vehicle was launched on 26, September, 2014 with a redesigned front and rear end, and a new dashboard.
It is commendable that the SUV has survived the test of time without major changes to the boxy design. In the mean time, many SUVs turned up at the market but very few of them gripped the market like the Scorpio.
In its latest generation, the Scorpio is built on an all-new platform. The SUV comes with a 2.5-litre turbo charged engine developing 75bhp and 200Nm of torque mated to a five-speed manual transmission for the rural market. The highlight engine is the four-cylinder 2.2litre mHawk engine that develops 120bhp at 4,000rpm and 280Nm of torque at 1,800-2,800rpm mated to five-speed manual transmission and six-speed automatic transmission.
The vehicle is currently available in seven variants and the price is from Rs 8.82 lakh to Rs 14.33 lakh ex-showroom, Delhi.
