Despite being the utility vehicle specialist of the country, Mahindra & Mahindra's extensive SUV portfolio is devoid of a crucial model, a full-size premium SUV. While no one has raised this as concerned this a shortcoming all these years, Mahindra has decided to step up the game. The contender is called Alturas G4.
Mahindra & Mahindra has launched the Alturas G4 on Saturday as a rival to the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. The premium SUV is offered in two configurations, 2WD priced at Rs 26.95 lakh and 4WD at Rs 29.95 lakh (ex-showroom).
Mahindra Alturas G4 is essentially the new generation SsangYong G4 Rexton (SsangYong is Mahindra's South Korean subsidiary). Mahindra in the badge-engineering exercise added a toothy chrome packed grille in the Alturas G4 to make it appealing for Indian customers. Rest of the Alturas is almost identical to the G4 Rexton.
The Alturas G4 gets muscular bumpers and the newly designed wrap-around headlamps look modern while the black body claddings accentuate off-road appeal. The prominent character lines on the side and the thick C-pillars adds muscle to the side profile.
In line with the premium theme, the cabin gets dual-tone dashboard and seats in the black and tan finish. It also flaunts an 8.0-inch HD touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 7.0-inch LCD instrument cluster, Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated seats, 8-way powered driver seat with memory profiles, 3D 360-degree view-around camera, dual zone climate control, a smart tailgate, 9 airbags, active roll-over protection and others.
Mahindra AlturasG4 is powered by a new 2.2-litre diesel engine making over 178hp at 4,000rpm and 420Nm at 1,600-2,600rpm. The BS-IV compliant mill comes mated to a Mercedes-Benz-sourced 7-speed automatic gearbox.
The Alturas G4 is offered in five colour options - New Pearl White, Napoli Black, Lakeside Brown, Dsat Silver and Regal Blue.
