The 13-year-old girl from Katni district of Madhya Pradesh, who got pregnant after her stepfather allegedly raped her, gave birth to a baby boy on Sunday, 8 November.
The girl is currently accommodated at NGO Little Star Foundation. After she went into labour at around 11 a.m. on Sunday, the NGO had called up 108 for an ambulance and was referred to a district hospital.
"Half an hour after her labour was induced, major pain kicked in and didn't let up until she delivered her baby. Both mother and child are fine," Dr. Sameer Chaudhary, NGO director, said.
He added that government officials have also been informed about the girl becoming mother to a baby boy.
Dr. Chaudhary added that the mother and the baby will remain in the hospital for a few days because he is "still confused about the baby."
"We have no option other than allowing her to keep the baby. She won't let him go. Let the state government take a call," he added, The Times of India reported.
After the rape incident, the minor was allegedly dragged out of her home by the police in Panna district, calling her a "disgrace" to the society. Furthermore, under police pressure, the girl's mother was forced to dump her at the government childcare centre from where she was sent to a private NGO, and finally to a government hospital in Jabalpur after her health sharply deteriorated.
The child welfare committee (CWC) in Jabalpur is now looking into her case.
On doctor's confirmation of her pregnancy, police arrested her stepfather in August while her mother had requested for an abortion which she was denied as Indian law prohibits abortion unless the pregnancy proves to be harmful to the mother's life.
