California-based electric car company Lucid Motors released images and details of its fully electric sedan christened as the Air. Still a prototype, Lucid Motors aims to start production of the Air in late 2018 and deliveries will start the same year.
The Air is powered by a 100-kilowatt-hour battery that delivers a total output of around 1000bhp. The powertrain will propel the Air to 96kmph in just 2.5 seconds, which is equal to a hyper car's territory. The luxury sedan has 643 kilometers range in a single charge. Well-optioned Lucid Air will be priced over $100,000 (Rs 67 lakh approximately).
Since it's an electric car, the first question that pops up in our mind is how it is going to affect electric car leader Tesla Motors. It looks like the Air won't be a Tesla competitor as the company said that it is targeted at the luxury executive market. This means that the Air will go up against the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series. Having said that, Lucid's founding team includes CTO Peter Rawlinson, who was a former Tesla team member and he led the engineering for the Model S.
On design front, the pictures released indicate Air will be one of the stylish electric cars. It comes with low-slung stance sleek body panels. It will feature a roomy cabin on the scale of a large sedan with plenty of legroom for rear passengers. Lucid will offer optional individual seats inspired by executive jet interiors, with a large degree of recline in the Air.
Lucid Motors' plan is to build electric vehicles starting in 2017 in Arizona, at the new factory facility that will make around 2,000 new jobs to the state, according to the company. Lucid was founded in 2007 by former Tesla and Oracle executives as a battery company. Formerly known as Atieva, the company has about 300 employees and is based in Menlo Park. Lucid Motors is backed by many multinational investors including LeEco, the Chinese tech giant.
