Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has claimed that it is quite clear that the city could be the next target for terrorists. The newly elected mayor has called for an urgent review to make sure the Metropolitan Police are prepared for an attack similar to ones seen in Paris and Brussels in recent months.
Khan said, After the horrific incidents in Paris and Brussels, it is quite clear that London could well be the next target for these terrorists. So Ive asked Lord Harris to carry out an urgent independent review to reassure me that our city is prepared for a major terrorist incident in London.
The Labour politician added, It is quite clear that the terrorists want to attack London. Theyve tried to attack London in the past, and weve got to make sure that were constantly vigilant. My job as Mayor of London is to do all that I can to keep our city safe.
The urgent review will involve assessing how prepared the police, along with other public services such as Transport for London (TFL) and London Fire Brigade are for a major incident in London. Lord Toby Harris, who will conduct the review, is a former Met Authority chair, and a member of the joint committee on the National Security Strategy.
The review was one of Khans manifesto promises in the mayoral election. He beat Conservative Party candidate Zac Goldsmith to win the race for city hall earlier in May.
