Close on the heels of Liverpool signing Ragnar Klavan for £4.2m on Wednesday comes the report suggesting that the Reds have managed to agree on a fee for Georginio Wijnaldum from Newcastle United. The highly-rated Dutch midfielder, whose medical test is expected to take place soon, will become the sixth signing of the season for Liverpool.
After finishing a disappointing eighth in the EPL last season, and failing to qualify for Champions league, Klopp understood the need of adding quality players in his squad. Sadio Mane, Marko Grujic, Joel Matip, Loris Karius are the other four players who the German has signed so far, and one will not be surprised if more players are brought into the squad, and sold as well, to challenge for a spot in the top four in the EPL.
If all these new players excel as a unit, along with the older stars, anything is possible in the unpredictable league, where Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea have a solid team.
There might be some deadwood, which Liverpool are willing to sell, including striker Mario Balotelli and Christian Benteke. Both the players have been reportedly told that they can leave the club.
However, focus is on the new signings at present, and what they can bring to Liverpool. Players like Mane, Grujic and Matip have been impressive in the pre-season, and have taken a flight for the U.S tour. The Dutch international is expected to join the team in the U.S, and make his debut as well.
Wijnaldum had an impressive season with Newcastle United, scoring 11 goals, and manager Rafa Benitez was full of praise for his midfielder, who still could not help his team stay afloat in the Premier League.
Though Wijnaldum impressed last season, it is going to be a different matter altogether at Liverpool, where the pressure is going to be twice as much, as also the huge expectations. However, Liverpool fans are happy with the news, and are discussing the player's move on Twitter.
