LG's smart devices component maker Innotek on Monday announced the launch of advanced fingerprint sensor, which can be embedded in a cover glass.
The new generation glass-based biometric sensor is said to soon replace the physical metal-clad fingerprint modules, which most of the times limit the OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) from coming up with creative designs for the phones.
This new revolutionary technology will allow smartphone makers to develop slimmer handsets as they will no more need extra space to incorporate separate module for the finger-print sensor. The use of glass will also help manufacturers to make the phone water-proof as well.
LG Innotek has used advanced precision and combination technology to carve out 0.3mm on the lower back side of a glass to embed fingerprint sensor. The high-strength cover glass will protect the sensor and prevent it from coming in direct contact with water or damage from scratches.
Once implemented, users will have to place their finger on designated display portion to unlock the phone. As per the LG Innotek's test results, new fingerprint scanner has 0.02% False Acceptance Rate (FAR), which means the new technology is 99.98 percent accurate.
"We are concentrating on all our resources to the development of the differentiated technology based on the creation of cus-tomer values.," Changhwan Kim, head of LG Innotek R&D Center, said in a statement.
"We will continue to provide convenient, safe, and pleasant user experiences by launching innovative product," Kim added.
As of now, LG Innotek has not revealed when this new revolutionary fingerprint scanner-based smartphones will be made available in the market.
