"Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" will be back on NBC with season 17 episode 4 titled "Institutional Fail" at 9pm on Wednesday, 7 October. In the sequel, Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and team will investigate a case of child negligence by the Department of Child Services.
The fourth episode will begin by showing a starving toddler wandering on the streets alone. The kid will lead the detectives to the house of Manuela Ozuna (Jessica Pimental), wherein they will find another child in grave condition.
When the team reaches out to the Department of Child Services for details about the family, they will find a few vague and backdated reports, which suggest that case worker Keith Musio (John Magaro) hadn't checked on the children for months.
Although the case worker accuses his supervisor Janette Grayson (Whoopi Goldberg) of orchestrating false reports, Deputy Chief William Dodds (Peter Gallagher) orders an internal investigation.
But things turn for the worse after neglect leads to death and ADA Rafael Barba (Raúl Esparza) takes matters into his own hands and arrests them for manslaughter.
Meanwhile, the official synopsis of "Institutional Fail" states that Dodds will hint at some changes coming to Benson's squad. However, it is not clear whether a new member will join the team or any of the existing members will depart from the group.
