Real Madrid have nosed ahead in the three-way title race in La Liga this season, and Carlo Ancelotti's men will look to put further daylight between themselves and their crosstown rivals when they face Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon on Sunday.
Diego Costa struck the winner for Atletico in the reverse fixture in September earlier this season at the Bernabeu, and if Atletico manage to take three points yet again, it will be the first time since the 1950-51 season that they do a double on their more illustrious rivals.
"We need to play with the greatest attention and play with the expectation of winning," Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone said. "Then we will see what is coming in the following days as they come. We give the match a value based in the time of the League in which we are."
The position that Atletico, who have no new injury concerns, find themselves in is third, level on points with second-placed Barcelona, and three behind Real Madrid. Ancelotti's men have been on a tear of late, and dismantled Schalke 6-1 in the Champions League in midweek, with three of their superstars - Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema - grabbing a brace each.
Real, who have a full squad barring long-term injury victim Sami Khedira, have not lost since going down to Barcelona in the El Clasico in October, and cruised past Atletico in the Copa Del Rey semifinal 5-0 on aggregate. The Los Blancos clearly start the game as favourites, but Atletico will be determined to keep their unbeaten record at home in La Liga intact.
"It will be an intense match, but that is normal," Ancelotti said. "It will be difficult and complicated, but we are going to try and play our game as well as possible. To beat Atletico we have to play with courage and personality. We have to be at our best both in defence and attack. It is a long season and we still have a lot of games left. Nothing is final at this point.
"Pressure is normal in this match and you have to deal with it. First because it's a derby, and then because it is between two teams who are in the fight for La Liga and also because they're big teams. We have a three-point advantage and you could say that we are favourites, but they also are because they have the home advantage and everyone knows that their fans help them."
