In yet another incident of sexual crime in the country, a housewife in Kolkata was raped in her flat by an electrician after the latter found her alone in the flat.
Taking advantage of the fact that the woman's husband and two children were not in the house, the accused, Bikram, entered the house on the pretext of fixing the electrical bell, forced the victim on to a bed and raped her, reports The Times of India.
"On Wednesday, the electricians began work around 3.30 pm. Bikram went upstairs and knocked on the door, saying he needed to enter the flat to complete the electric bell wiring. As soon as he entered, he found the woman alone. He used force to push her down on the bed before raping her," said deputy commissioner-south Suburban Santosh Pandey.
Police are also on the lookout for the second electrician to find out whether he was indirectly involved in the crime.
The woman though traumatised managed to call the police helpline number. Bikram was eventually caught after his cell phone location was tracked. The police found it shocking though that he expressed no regret for his action, smiling away as he was led away by the cops.
"Bikram was living in Sonarpur with his wife but had sent away his children to some relatives elsewhere, saying Sonarpur wasn't a good place for them. It seems he had no intention of robbing. The court has granted us seven days custody of the accused. We will interrogate him thoroughly," said one of the investigating officers.
The woman was made to undergo a medical test which confirmed rape.
