Superstar Rajinikanth's "Kochadaiiyaan" is among the all time top five highest grossing Tamil films in the United States.
The Tamil version has fetched grand response in India as well as overseas markets. The historic drama grossed $436,165 (reported screens) in its opening weekend and till date it has minted around $525,000 (₹3.1 crore) at the US box office, reported Behindwoods website.
The Rajinikanth starrer has managed to enter into the list of all time highest grossing Tamil films in the US. The other four films are the superstar's "Endhiran" and "Sivaji", and Kamal Haasan's "Vishwaroopam" and "Dasavatharam."
Thalaivar, as he is fondly called, has a massive fan following in the US and his films always fetch grand response. "Kochadaiiyaan" also took a good opening in the country and performed well at the box office. With the film crossing half a million mark, it will be interesting to see how it fares in the coming days. It also needs to be seen whether the film will cross the coveted $1 million mark.
"Endhiran" and "Vishwaroopam" are the only Tamil films that have crossed the $1 million mark in the US. "Sivaji" minted around $600,000, whereas "Dasavatharam" earned $500,000. Ajith's "Arrambam" which minted approximately over $300,000 was ranked fifth in the list, but "Kochadaiiyaan" surpassed the film's collections in its opening weekend itself. The Soundarya directorial is expected to outperform Shankar's "Sivaji" soon and register more collections.
Although "Kochadaiiyaan" has been doing good business in the US, the film could not outshine another biggie, which hit the screens on the same day. Telugu film "Manam" is performing exceptionally well in the country and the Akkineni starrer has already crossed the $1 million mark. Clearly, the family drama has managed to overcome the strong competition posed by "Kochadaiiyaan" and emerge on top.
On the other hand, both "Kochadaiiyaan" and "Manam" have affected the business of Hindi film "Heropanti." Tiger Shroff's debut film got eclipsed by the two biggies and film's collections were low in the US.
The Tamil version of "Kochadaiiyaan" is also faring well in India. The film took a fantastic opening in its debut weekend and it is expected to end the first week on a good note. With no big releases, the Rajinikanth starrer is likely to continue its good run at the box office.
