Thousands of cricket fans gathered outside Kolkata's Eden Gardens stadium Tuesday to have a glimpse of this year's winning team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, where the West Bengal government felicitated the players.

Kolkata Knight Riders' grand victory celebrations turned murkier when the police resorted to a mild lathicharge and disperse the huge crowd outside the stadium after some fans broke through the barricades to enter inside, IBNS reported.

According to the Times of India, there was great chaos as nearly 30,000 people thronged outside the stadium. TV reports showed that a few of them were injured during the commotion and lathicharge.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee felicitated the IPL winning team Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, held up the Cup with the team and the actors, and got cheered by nearly 70,000 people.

Earlier, hit numbers from Shah Rukh Khan's films were played as thousands of frenzied fans thronged the streets of Kolkata from Hazra crossing in south at around 11-10 am, where the KKR team began their victory lap.

Though the co-owner, superstar SRK was not present at Hazra, the gathering cheered the players.

However, the situation turned quite chaotic owing to the surging crowd and the convoy soon left towards Writers' Buildings where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee waited to greet them.

From Writers' Buildings, the state secretariat, the convoy went to Eden Gardens stadium where people had assembled since night to cheer the team.

KKR won IPL 2012 by defeating the Chennai Super Kings by five wickets with two balls to spare in a high-voltage final match in Chennai on Sunday.
