Rocking Star Yash's KGF (Kolar Gold Fields) is unstoppable and is in no mood to spare Shah Rukh Khan starrer Zero at the box office. Despite having less screen counts compared to Aanand L Rai's directorial, the Prashanth Neel film has emerged victorious in its opening weekend.
After taking a flying start on the opening day at the domestic box office, KGF kept the cash registers ringing with its monstrous run showing unprecedented growth over the weekend.
On Friday, KGF collected Rs 18.1 crore nett which was a record-breaking number for any Kannada movie on the first day of its release. The positive word of mouth further escalated its collections on Saturday and earned Rs 19.25 crore at the ticket window. On Sunday, the movie showed immense growth by raking in a staggering Rs 22.40 crore rounding up its total opening weekend collections to Rs 59.61 crore.
Zero, on the other hand, has been struggling to gain momentum at the box office and has been underperforming since day 1. On Friday, it it earned Rs 20.14 crore whereas on Saturday, it witnessed a small unexpected dip in its collections and minted Rs 18.22 crore. On Sunday, the movie, which also stars Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif in the lead, remained steady by earning Rs 20.71 crore taking its total opening weekend collections to Rs 59.07 crore.
Going by the box office collections of KGF and Zero, it is clear that Rocking Star Yash's film turned out to be a gold digger in the domestic market while Shah Rukh Khan's film remained ordinary.
It is to be noted that Zero had acquired almost 40 per cent more screen counts all across the country and a much bigger star cast than KGF but still it failed to do wonders at the box office.
Zero will now have to remain strong during weekdays which is crucial to sum up its first week collections on a good note whereas KGF's potential will be put on test to see if it could survive in difficult situations and leave Shah Rukh Khan starrer far behind in this ultimate box office race.
For the uninitiated, Zero was released across 4380 screens, KGF was released across 2460 screens in India.
