Congress candidate Shashi Tharoor has defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate O Rajagopal by over 14,000 votes in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
The union minister had won the seat in 2009 with a margin of one lakh seats, but this time he had to fight a tough battle against the BJP senior leader. Left candidate Bennet Abraham is in the third position.
The Congress candidates in Kerala including party spokesperson P C Chacko, Siddique and Dean Kuriakose have lost in their respective constituencies. Chacko was defeated by Malayalam actor Innocent, who contested as LDF independent candidate from Chalakudy.
Meanwhile, the Congress-led UDF has beaten CPI(M)-led LDF. The UDF has won Malappuram, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Wayanad, Kottayam, Mavelikkara, Kozhikode, Ponnani, Vadakara and Thiruvananthapuram constituencies.
The LDF has won in Palakkad, Kasargod, Alathur, Attingal, Thirussur, Idukki, Chalakudy and Kannur constituencies.
