Superstar Mohanlal's action thriller Pulimurugan has been making a tremendous collection at the Kerala box office since its release on October 7. The Vysakh-directed film, which is all set to become the biggest Malayalam grosser of the year, has already broken the records of many previous blockbusters, after opening to an amazing response from the audience.
However, a slight drop in the earnings of Pulimurugan has helped the latest Malayalam campus entertainer, Aanandam, to overtake the action thriller at multiplexes in Kochi. Despite being a movie starring seven newcomers in lead roles, it has beaten the 20th day collection of the Mohanlal-starrer. While Aanandam made Rs 6.8 lakh on its sixth day, Pulimurugan earned Rs 6.72 lakh on its 20th day at the multiplexes.

Ganesh Raj's directorial venture enjoyed 82 percent theatre occupancy from 28 shows, even though the Mohanlal-starrer had 15 shows more with 43.37 percent theatre occupancy at six multiplexes in the city. Pulimurugan has now minted Rs 2.46 crore in 20 days, while Aanandam did a total business of Rs 40.92 lakh within six days from five multiplexes in Kochi.

The other recent releases, including Thoppil Joppan and Oppam, have also been making decent earnings at multiplexes. The Mammootty-starrer, which was released along with Pulimurugan, has so far earned Rs 70.35 lakh, a collection that is far less than the Mohanlal-starrer's 20-day earning. Meanwhile, the Priyadarshan-directed Oppam is moving towards the Rs 2 crore-mark, following the path of Pulimurugan. The crime thriller, in which the superstar plays the role of a blind man Jayaraman, has collected Rs 1.9 crore within 49 days at multiplexes in Kochi.
However, Tamil movies Kodi and Kaashmora, which will be released on October 28, are expected to slightly affect the good run of the recent releases. But no big Malayalam films are being released during the festive season of Diwali.
