In an accident that happened early morning on Monday, 23 November, five passengers in a tourist bus were killed when it collided with a lorry on National Highway 213 near Ayikkarappadi in Malappuram.
The deceased have been identified as Raveendran (54), Omana (42), Devi (67), Surya (13) and Athul (10). At least 18 others have been admitted to Kozhikode Medical College and a private hospital in Ramanattukara with serious injuries.
The mishap happened at 3:30 am while the passengers were on their way from Salem to Mattannur in Kannur after attending a wedding.
Reports suggest the truck was parked on the roadside and bus driver tried to avoid collision with a car that came from opposite direction, leading to the accident. Speeding is also being cited as a reason for the mishap.
Initially, local residents rescued some of the passengers, having arrived at the spot after hearing the collision. The police and other officials subsequently joined the rescue operations.
