A student of Nattakam government polytechnic college in Kottayam district of Kerala was hospitalised after being ragged in the college by seniors. His kidneys were damaged and he was given dialysis after the incident.
First-year student Avinash and other students were harassed by nine seniors, all of whom are missing, in the college. The nine students have been suspended from the college after media's wide coverage of the case.
Avinash's father, Sivadasan, filed a complaint with the Kottayam district police on Friday saying that a gang of students undressed his son and made him do push-ups on December 2. His father filed a complaint under the Kerala prohibition of ragging Act 1998 and SC/ST atrocities Act.
Avinash was also forcibly fed liquor mixed with some substances that affected his kidney. He was taken to Mother Hospital, Thrissur. The college had taken no action against the students.
Both of Avinash's kidneys were damaged due to excessive physical activity. First-year students were reportedly forced to do 100 sit-ups and 100 push-ups. They were woken up after their dinner and taken to the seniors' room. After one of the students vomited from physical exhaustion, he was given 10-minute rest and forced to continue with other "exercises".
Dr PM Jayaraj, a nephrologist at Mother Hospital, told the Deccan Chronicle that both the kidneys of Avinash were damaged due to excessive physical activity creating myoglobin protein in the blood which is filtered by the kidneys.
"If the amount of this protein is too high that will adversely affect the kidneys. Avinash is put on haemodialysis and he will recover within three weeks," he said.
