Balmain creative director and wunderkind Olivier Rousteing did what he does best and brought the fashion masses back to the runway on 20 October hosting a wild, dance extravaganza at 23 Wall Street to launch the designers collaboration with high-street store H and M.
In true Rousteing form, the show was a glittering spectacle and no model worth knowing had the night off. Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss and Jourdan Dunn were joined by Alessandra Ambrosio, Jessica Stam and Joan Smalls, to name but a few, who took to the runway in the brands signature brocade, embellished and draped designs.
As the models walked, the crowd was entertained further with dancing troupes on the stage behind the models, which was topped only by a post-show performance from The Backstreet Boys.
Jenner, 19, opened the catwalk show in a black jacket embellished with gold beading and loose velvet trousers with her waist cinched in with the black leather and metallic-finished belt.
The collection blended the classic Balmain signature designs with the rich, dark palette of the AW15 collection. Dark emerald velvets and silks adorned with jewels were displayed alongside loose silk harem pants and bandeau tops reflecting the sultry 1970s aesthetic that dominated the autumn trends.
With the average Balmain AW15 jacket retailing in-store for around £1,495 ($2,310) this collaboration is the perfect opportunity for Balmain to bring its products to a wider market with the same style of product retailing in H and M for a far more palatable £79.99.
While the catwalk teeming with supermodels, the FROW was no less impressive, with Alexa Chung, Diane Kruger and Jenner among the Balmain-draped guests who attended the show. The party must have gone to plan as Rousteing was quoted on the H and M website as saying the night had been a dream come true for me. The energy and vibe is unbelievable.
Since its first collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld back in 2004, H and M has worked with a host of high fashion brands including Isabel Marant, Comme des Garcons and Alexander Wang. With consistently good results and immediate sell through on most collections, the Swedish retailer has secured its position as the go-to store for high-end brands to partner in order to bring their designs to the masses.
The collection is available to buy in-store and online from 5 November. These are the pieces we will be grabbing:
