Actor Mammootty's latest release "Kasaba" has opened to a tremendous response at the box office in Kerala. It was released on Thursday, July 7 as an Eid treat to the fans of the megastar. It is now said to have shattered the existing records of the highest opening day grossing movie in Malayalam.
The first day shows of the action thriller "Kasaba" witnessed houseful status in almost all the theatres across the state. The film was released in 101 screens. A source close to the movie has now confirmed to International Business Times India that the debut directorial venture of Nithin Renji Panicker has earned a gross amount of Rs. 2.50 crore on its opening day at the box office in the state.
Going by the figures, the Mammootty-starrer has become the highest opening day grosser in Malayalam, breaking the records of Dulquer Salmaan's "Kali," "Charlie" and Mohanlal's "Loham." Director Sameer Thahir's "Kali" was said to have collected almost Rs. 2.33 crore on its first day, while "Loham" and Martin Prakkat-directed "Charlie" are believed to have earned Rs. 2.14 crore and Rs. 2.06, respectively, on their first day at the Kerala box office.
According to trade analysts, "Kasaba" collected approximately Rs. 10.74 lakh from multiplexes in Kochi alone on the first day of its release. "#Kasaba Day 1 Cochin Multiplexes Collection - 10.74 Lakhs (97.49% Occupancy) #Excellent [sic]," Forumkeralam tweeted.
Despite locking horns with Salman Khan's "Sultan," Asif Ali's "Anuraga Karikkin Vellam," Kunchacko Boban, Jayasurya, Amala Paul's "Shajahanum Pareekuttiyum" and Manju Warrier's "Karinkunnam 6's," the action thriller has now emerged as the winner among the Eid releases.
However, the social media response hints that the movie has impressed only the fans of the megastar. It is said to be a film that shows the heroism of the megastar, who has donned the police uniform for a movie after a gap of five years.
Owning to the thunderous opening, the screen counts have been increased in many places. The movie, produced by Alice George under the banner of Goodwill Entertainment, has also been released in Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad.
