Bangalore-based smartphone maker Karbonn Mobiles has released a budget Android handset called A8 via an online store.
The low-cost Karbonn phone is currently available at e-retailer Saholic for ₹6,189. It sports a 4.0-inch TFT LCD WVGA display with 800x480 resolution and ships with Android v4.2 Jelly Bean OS out-of-the-box.
In terms of internal hardware, the smartphone packs a dual-core processor which tops a maximum CPU speed close to 1GHz. It features 512MB RAM, 4GB memory with options of expansion up to 32GB via microSD card.
Karbonn A8 flaunts a 5.0-megapixel camera with LED flash on the rear side and a 0.3-megapixel (VGA) secondary camera. Connectivity wise, it features Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n), A-GPS, and Bluetooth with A2DP support.
Just a couple of days ago, Karbonn Mobiles' rival Micromax too released a budget handset called Canvas Fun A74 which also features pretty much the same specifications sans the screen size.
According to a latest report from IDC (International Data Corporation) India, both Micromax (22-percent) and Karbonn Mobiles (13-percent) are giving MNC companies a run for their money. They are currently placed in second and third positions, respectively, in the top smartphone makers' chart in Q2 2013, beating top international vendors like Nokia (5-percent) and Sony (5-percent) by a considerable margin. Samsung tops the list with 26-percent market share.
Going by the statistics, Indian companies are expected to make further inroads in the third quarter.
