After the success of his newcomer-starrer "Student of the Year", filmmaker Karan Johar has come up with his next venture titled "Gippi" starring Riya Vij in the lead role.
"Gippi" is a teenage drama in which Riya plays the role of an overweight 14-year-old girl, Gurpreet Kaur, aka Gippi, who detests dieting and has a secret crush on Taaha Shah in her school.
The makers of the movie released the three minute long trailer of the movie on 1 April.
"Gippi" is one of the low-budget movies produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions. The movie is directed by Sonam Nair, who had earlier worked with "Wake up Sid" director Ayan Mukherji .
Most of the cast members were newcomers based in Delhi. The role of Gippi's mother is played by actress Divya Dutt.
Claiming that his "Gippi" is a small movie with a large heart Karan said, "Gippi is a new kind of film and it is unusual for us to venture into that space. I hope it gets all the love it deserves. The script took me back to my growing-up years. Everyone has a Gippi in them and I'm sure people will connect with the character. Small films need large strategies. And we'll be going all out for this one. It has been translated very sensibly."
Speaking about director Sonam Nair, Karan said, "She has the spark to make great fun films." Karan also said that Sonam is the first woman director on the Dharma Productions project.
The music of the movie is composed by duo Vishal-Shekhar. "They have come up with a spunky soundtrack. Just like the character of Gippi, the music had to be kick-ass," said Karan.
"Gippi" is set to hit the screens on 10 May.
