Atharvaa's "Kanithan" has done fairly well at the box office in Tamil Nadu in its first weekend. The movie was released last Friday, Feb.26 and opened to mixed reviews.
A report on Behindwoods says that "Kanithan" has garnered somewhere between Rs 2.75-3 crore in the first weekend. This is a decent number for a Tamil flick, which does not have any big star in the cast.
"Kanithan" was released in 175 screens and clashed with other new release Arulnithi-starrer "Aarathu Sinam." It also faced competition from previous-week's movies like Jayam Ravi's "Miruthan" and Vijay Sethupathi's "Sethupathi."
The Atharvaa-starrer film has done notable business in Chennai in three days. It has raked in Rs 51.09 lakh from 156 shows, which is considered an above-average opening in the capital city of Tamil Nadu.
'Kanithan' at overseas centres
The latest Tamil movie could not set box office on fire at the overseas centres. In the US box office, it earned Rs 1.95 lakh from eight screens in its opening weekend, reports Bollywood Hungama. On the other hand, "Aarathu Sinam" collected Rs 1.27 lakh from six screens.
"Sethupathi" remains the top film among the Tamil flicks in the US this weekend. The total collection of the flick by the end of its second weekend stands at Rs 43.01 lakh.
"Kanithan" collected Rs 6.01 lakh in the UK. The industry had expected the movie to do well in Malaysia, but it could earn only Rs 2.13 lakh.
Atharvaa's film is written and directed by TN Santhosh and bankrolled by leading producer Kalaipuli S Dhanu. Catherine Tresa plays the female lead in the film, which has Bollywood actor Tarun Arora in the role of antagonist. K Bhagyaraj, Manobala, Aadukalam Naren, YG Mahendra, Sunder Ramu and others are in the cast.
