Kamal Haasan has been slammed by a section of J Jayalalithaa fans for paying homage to five-time Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, who died on Tuesday, August 7. They are upset because the actor had failed to give a tribute to the AIADMK leader, who died in December 2016.
The actor was busy with the shooting of his movie Sabaash Naidu in the US when the AIADMK chief passed away and could not attend the funeral. But what triggered the controversy was his condolence tweet.
"Deepest sympathies to everyone depend on Jayalalithaa. [sic]" This post had left the late Amma's followers fuming and some even called it a "distasteful" comment.
It has to be noted that Kamal Haasan's relationship with J Jayalalithaa had soured after she stalled the release of his Vishwaroopam for two weeks in Tamil Nadu in 2013. She had claimed that the release of the movie would create law and order issues as the film had depicted members of a fringe group in a bad light. However, reports suggested that the real reason was said to be a pro-DMK comment made by the multifaceted actor.
In the case of M Karunanidhi, Kamal Haasan cancelled all his commitments in New Delhi and returned to Chennai to pay homage to the leader.
"He was a sort of a vicarious teacher for me, for most Tamil actors. He was like a gatepass for us actors who wanted to show their prowess and their pronunciation. The language we used was Karunanidhi's, the voice imitated came from Sivaji Ganesan, and our vocabulary came from Kannadasan. So these were the three Tamil teachers who taught many Tamilian actors Tamil and the topmost among them all is no more with us," News18 quotes Kamal Haasan as saying.
He shared a close relationship with the five-time Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.
Below, find select-few comments posted against Kamal Haasan's stand:
Saiganesh: #KamalHaasan when he started his party told that he didn't visit Abdul Kalam and Jayalalithaa after their death for condolence because he doesn't believe in these last rites but now visits #Karunanidhi for condolence. BIG HYPOCRITE!
True_Machinist: You will not get answers for the above screenshot bro. These guys search for flaws in every talk of #Rajini but will ignore any wrong committed by their fav star. That gesture by #KamalHaasan should have been avoided. Such a guy is he.
Khaja_OI: Hypocrisy at its best. #KamalHaasan has no time to pay homage for #Jayalalithaa.. but for #Karunanidhi....
Kamal Haasan: Did anybody notice... #KamalHaasan, who could not turn to pay homage to #Jayalalalithaa and made a controversial condolence tweet, now paying tributes to #Karunanidhi.
Rajini is not here to do offensive politics. He knows the starting of blame-game is being offensive. Also, its an usual respect to the office of CM which was controlled by great leaders before. https://t.co/FyFI94sOU4
