"Kai Po Che!" did well at the domestic box office on the opening day, collecting a decent ₹4.5 crore despite the absence of big names in the lead roles. The collections were better in the metros than in towns and countryside.
The film, which has no known names in the cast, was released in a limited 1,000 screens on Friday and did good business in India.
"#KaiPoChe Fri 4.5 cr. Excellent start for a film that does not boast of star names," trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh tweeted.
The collection of the movie was good in Mumbai and Mysore circuit, while it was decent in Delhi. The business in UP and Punjab was below the expectations and the collection in Central India was also poor.
The collection of the film is expected to shoot up during the weekend, especially in metros where it witnessed good opening. The weekend collections are crucial for the film to survive at the box office in the long run.
Directed by Abhishek Kapoor, the movie features Sushant Singh Rajput, Raj Kumar Yadav, Amit Sadh and Amrita Puri in the lead roles. It is based on Chetan Bhagat's novel "The 3 Mistakes of my Life".
The film was shot in Gujarat and so its title is also in Gujarati. So, it is expected to have a decent collection in the state.
The story line, which is based on the friendship of three friends, has been appreciated by critics, celebrities and moviegoers alike.
"The film is about all those things that make young India tick - love, cricket, career and politics. But above all, it's about friendship. It's a story about three friends trying to make their way in the world, while life-changing events that defined India at the turn of the century are unfolding around them. It is both entertaining and emotional," Siddharth Roy Kapur, managing director, Studios, Disney UTV told The Times of India.
"There is something just incredible about it. It's one of the most heartfelt and courageous films I have seen. Very rarely do evolved performances, simplistic treatment, perfect editing and amazing photography, all come together as one, to blow your mind. You just can't miss this one," said Hrithik Roshan.
"I really enjoyed the film. Abhishek has directed it very well and the cast has done a fantastic job. Great music too," Aamir Khan said after watching the special screening in Jaipur.
