Abhishek Kapoor's directorial movie "Kai Po Che!" did tremendous business at the box office after minting ₹18.10 crore over the weekend.
The movie, produced by UTV motions and based on Chetan's Bhagat's novel "Three Mistakes of My Life", was released on 22 February and collected ₹7.35 crore on Sunday alone.
Trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh tweeted, "#KaiPoChe collected approx ₹18.10 cr nett in its opening weekend. Breakup:- Fri 4.50 cr, Sat 6.25 cr, Sun 7.35 cr. Fantastic!"
The movie, made on a budget of ₹12 crore, does not boast a superstar cast and instead features three newcomers - Sushant Singh Rajput, Raj Kumar Yadav and Amit Sadh. Amrita Puri is also seen playing a key role in the movie.
Another attraction of "Kai Po Che!" is that Bhagat's son has debuted in the movie. "They needed an eight-year-old boy for a very crucial role in the film. I have twin sons Ishaan and Sham and Ishaan has played a small role in the film. Abhishek has honoured an author and a father by this," Bhagat told IANS.
"Kai Po Che!" hit 1,000 screens on its opening day across the country.
According to Bollywood Hungama, the movie ran well in urban cinema houses and on Sunday many have increased the number of shows on public demand.
"Kai Po Che!" received excellent reviews from critics and was marked as a must-watch film by Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV.
Ahead of its world wide release on 22 February, "Kai Po Che!" had a world premiere at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival on 13 February. It was reportedly the first Indian film to feature in the World Panorama section of the festival.
