RATING: 4/5
It is said that a mother can go up to any extent to save her child and Kahaani 2 depicts the same with a good dose of thrill and emotion.
Starring Vidya Balan and Arjun Rampal, Kahaani 2 is the second instalment of Vidya's one of the best films Kahaani. Keeping up with the expectations, Kahaani 2 has a good storyline that has almost everything to keep the audience hooked to their seats.
PLOT
Vidya plays the character of Durga Rani Singh/Vidya Sinha. Yes, she leads a dual life in the film. She resides along with her teenage paralysed daughter Mini, played by Naisha Khanna at a small town in West Bengal.
The mother-daughter lead a happy life until hell breaks loose on them as Mini gets kidnapped. Vidya receives a call from the kidnapper, asking her to come to a particular location if she wishes to see her daughter alive. Terrified by the call, Vidya rushes to the spot, but meets with a major accident on the way and goes into coma.
There comes the entry of Arjun Rampal (Inderjeet Singh), who plays the character of a cop and visits the hospital where Vidya is admitted to investigate the accident. It turns out that Arjun and Vidya had a big connection in their past life.
However, Arjun gets perplexed when he discovers that originally Durga, now lives her life by the name of Vidya. Already baffled Arjun becomes more confused when a senior officer hands over a case to him and asks him to find a wanted criminal named Durga Rani Singh. She has been charged with kidnapping and murder.
Arjun then sets out to solve the mystery as he believes that Vidya can never commit a crime like that. Vidya has a habit of writing major incidents of her life in a diary, which Arjun gets hold of and that serves as a big clue for the cop to unveil the truth.
Meanwhile, Vidya recovers from coma and police also realise that she is the same wanted criminal. Vidya pleads before the senior cop to save her daughter, but no one believes her. She somehow manages to run out of the hospital to rescue her loving daughter and then starts a cat and rat chase.
POSITIVES
The movie Kahaani 2 has a number of mysteries that gradually keeps unfolding. Some of the questions that keep the viewers glued to the screen are: who kidnaps her daughter and why? Why Vidya has a dual life? What is her relation with Arjun? Are the criminal charges on her true?
Director Sujoy Ghosh is known for making gripping thriller movies and Kahaani 2 certainly reflects his prowess as a director. The film's narration is fast-paced as all the mysteries around the film keep unfolding in a dramatic, but entertaining manner. No unnecessary songs make the narration more engaging.
PERFORMANCE
Vidya Balan is as usual superb in her performance. She plays the de-glam character to perfection. Arjun, who has been one of the most under-rated actors, also does full justice to his character. The film gets full marks as far as performance of the stars is concerned.
NEGATIVES
However, there are some loopholes in the film that does not go unnoticed. For instance, it is shown that the kidnapper called two close-aids of Vidya and faked her voice to facilitate the abduction. But how it was done is never revealed in the film.
Moreover, the main antagonist, played by Jugal Hansraj (Mohit Dewan) wants to kill both Vidya and her daughter, which he could easily do separately. But he chooses to call Vidya to a location and force her to kill her daughter herself. Yes, that's too clichéd. Although Kahaani 2 has a number of twists and turns that are quite amusing, those twists are not up to the mark that the predecessor had.
VERDICT
All in all, Kahaani 2 is a wonderfully narrated thriller that may not impress you as much as Kahaani did, but will certainly leave you will the good feeling of "paisa vasool."
